Police redraw 'beats' for patrolling in Delhi
New Delhi: The Delhi Police have revamped 'beats' (area of patrolling assigned to constables) in all the 11 districts of the national capital in an effort to ensure better human intelligence gathering system.

"A detailed survey in this regard has been carried out under the supervision of Deputy Commissioners of Police in charge of each district. We have redefined areas of patrolling for beat constables to serve people in a better way and to harness human intelligence," a senior police officer said.

As part of the drive, the beat areas have been decreased or police personnel strength have been increased on the basis of density of population, analysis made of rate of crimes so that more attention could be paid by police officials looking after it, the official said.

According to the official, there are about 2,000 beats in 155 police stations across the national capital.

Home Minister P Chidambaram on various forum had advocated improvement in the ground level intelligence gathering system by constable ranked police officials.

The need for such a measure has arisen because of the vulnerability of the national capital against terror activities and increased influx of job seekers and other people from across the country. Also, Delhi is witnessing demographical changes in terms of increase in density of population, he said.
