In Parliament Row Over Niranjan Jyoti, Finally a Solution: 10 Developments

Protests in the Lok Sabha over hate speech by minister Niranjan Jyoti

New Delhi: A row in Parliament over union minister Niranjan Jyoti's hate speech ended on Monday with Rajya Sabha chairman Hamid Ansari brokering a pact to end a week-long deadlock.

Here are 10 developments in this story:

  1. At a meeting called by Mr Ansari with the government and the opposition, members agreed that the chairperson would endorse PM Modi's statement appealing for an end to the impasse and also make a fresh appeal to "all MPs, ministers and leaders of all political parties to maintain civility at all costs in public discourse."

  2. A united opposition had earlier insisted on a resolution that "strongly disapproves of any statement by an MP or a minister that is inflammatory and derogatory and violates the letter and spirit of the Constitution."

  3. The government has refused, saying that the minister's apology and PM Modi's statement should be enough. Opposition parties said the minister deserves condemnation and outright sacking.

  4. The minister will campaign again in Delhi today, despite outrage over her statements at a rally last week.

  5. The BJP had ruled out Ms Jyoti's resignation, with PM Modi urging the house to consider that she is from a "rural background" and a first time MP.

  6. The Rajya Sabha adjourned thrice this morning over opposition protests. Congress leader Anand Sharma criticised the "obduracy and arrogance" of the government for not agreeing to a resolution.

  7. The Government had on Sunday appealed to opposition parties to drop their protests and enable smooth functioning of Parliament.

  8. The opposition, however, protested that the prime minister never once expressed regret. "He didn't show respect to the house. It took him three days to come from his parliament office to the house," said Anand Sharma.

  9. Last week, Rahul Gandhi joined opposition members in a "black band protest" outside Parliament and accused the Modi government of silencing democratic discourse.

  10. The 47-year-old Ms Jyoti apologized in Parliament last week for her speech in which she said, "The people of Delhi have to decide if they want a government of Ramzaadon (descendants of Ram) or haramzaadon (those who are illegitimately born)."
