Girl killed in railway wall collapse, locals block tracks

Bhubaneshwar: A 10-year-old girl was killed and four others were seriously injured when a boundary wall of the railways caved in near Khurda Road railway station, police said.

Irate locals staged a rail roko at Khurda Road station , 25 km from Bhubaneswar, affecting railway traffic on the busy Howrah-Chennai route.

The boundary wall between the railway station and adjoining Kudiary village collapsed when the victims were passing through the area, GRP sources said.

The girl, who belonged to Kudiary village, was on way to the nearby school accompanied by her father when the mishap struck them.

She was declared brought dead at the local government hospital

Her father and three others sustained serious injury. The injured were being treated at a private hospital at Bhubaneswar, he said.

As soon as the news spread, over 500 irate people stormed into the Khurda Road station and staged a rail roko demanding Rs 10 lakh ex-gratia to the victim.

Railway traffic on the busy Howrah-Chennai route was affected as slogan shouting agitators squatted on the tracks preventing movement of trains.

As a result, trains including Mangalore-Santragachi Vivek Express, Secundarabad-Howrah Faluknama Express, Puri- Santragachi passenger and Talcher-Puri passenger were stranded at Khurda Road station while other trains detained at nearby stations, the sources said.
