The Indian passenger vehicle market began 2026 on a strong footing, with steady demand across hatchbacks, sedans, and SUVs driving robust January sales. Shifting consumer preference towards compact SUVs and value-rich mainstream models is evident in the month's top 10 best-sellers.
Tata Nexon
Leading the list is the Tata Nexon range, including the Nexon EV, with combined sales of 23,365 units in January 2026. The ICE Nexon gets a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine with CNG option and a 1.5-litre turbo diesel, with manual and AMT gearbox options.

Meanwhile, the Nexon EV is offered with 30 kWh and 45 kWh battery packs, both using a front-mounted motor producing 145 hp and 215 Nm. The 38 kWh version has an ARAI-certified range of 325 km, while the 45 kWh version offers up to 489 km on a full charge.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire
In second place, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire registered 19,629 units in January 2026. It is powered by a new Z-series 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 82 hp and 112 Nm. A 5-speed manual and AMT are on offer.
Tata Punch
Claiming third spot, the Tata Punch facelift and Punch EV together posted 19,257 units. The updated Punch, priced from Rs 5.59 lakh (ex-showroom), gets cosmetic updates, more features, and a new engine option. It offers a 1.2-litre NA petrol and a 1.2-litre turbo petrol with a 6-speed manual. The Punch.ev comes in Standard (25 kWh, 315 km MIDC range) and Long Range (35 kWh, 421 km MIDC range) versions.

Hyundai Creta
Next on the list is the Hyundai Creta and Creta Electric, with combined sales of 17,921 units. The Creta offers three engines: a 1.5-litre turbo petrol, a 1.5-litre NA petrol, and a 1.5-litre turbo diesel. The Creta Electric gets a 42 kWh battery with 390 km ARAI range and a 51.4 kWh long-range pack with a claimed 473 km per charge.
Maruti Suzuki Ertiga
Fifth place goes to the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga MPV with 17,892 units. It uses a 1.5-litre NA petrol engine producing 103 hp and 137 Nm, paired with a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. Key features include a 7-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, Arkamys sound system, automatic climate control and a three-row seven-seat layout.

Maruti Suzuki Swift
The Maruti Suzuki Swift recorded 17,806 units, taking the sixth spot. It is powered by a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder NA petrol engine producing 82 hp and 112 Nm. Claimed fuel efficiency stands at 24.8 kmpl for the manual and 25.75 kmpl for the AMT.
Maruti Suzuki Brezza
Seventh on the chart is the Maruti Suzuki Brezza with 17,486 units. It uses a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder NA petrol engine with mild-hybrid tech, producing 103 PS and 137 Nm, mated to a 5-speed manual or 6-speed torque-converter automatic. A CNG option is also offered with a 5-speed manual.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno
In eighth position, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno posted 16,782 units. It is powered by a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder NA petrol engine putting out 90 PS and 113 Nm, with 5-speed manual and AMT gearbox options.

Mahindra Scorpio-N, Scorpio Classic
Ninth place is taken by the Mahindra Scorpio-N and Scorpio Classic, with combined sales of 15,542 units. The Scorpio-N gets a 2.0-litre petrol and a 2.2-litre mHawk turbo diesel. The Scorpio Classic continues with a 2.2-litre turbo diesel and manual gearbox.
Maruti Suzuki Victoris
Rounding off the list, the Maruti Suzuki Victoris recorded 15,240 units in January 2026. It offers a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder NA petrol with 5-speed manual and 6-speed torque-converter automatic, plus AWD and CNG with an underbody tank. The 1.5-litre strong-hybrid petrol version is paired with an e-CVT automatic.
