VinFast is no longer just another emerging electric vehicle brand trying to enter India. The Vietnamese automaker is building something far bigger. During NDTV AutoMate's recent visit to Vietnam, one thing became evident very quickly, VinFast's ambitions go well beyond selling electric cars. The company, backed by Vietnam's largest private conglomerate VinGroup, is building an entire ecosystem around mobility, infrastructure, manufacturing, urban development, and technology. And now, India is becoming a major part of that strategy.

VinFast's India Plans Are Aggressive

VinFast has already announced a major manufacturing investment in India with its upcoming plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. Spread across nearly 400 acres, the facility will initially have an annual production capacity of 50,000 vehicles. More importantly, the company has committed an investment of up to $2 billion for its India operations over time.

The roadmap is equally aggressive. VinFast plans to introduce multiple EVs in India, including the VF6, VF7, and the newly showcased VF MPV7. The company is also preparing to bring electric scooters and electric buses to the Indian market by late 2026.

VF MPV7 Could Be A Key Product For India

Among all the vehicles showcased during the visit, the VF MPV7 stood out as one of the most relevant products for India. The electric MPV is clearly aimed at family buyers looking for practicality and space.

Built on the VF7 platform, the MPV7 focuses more on comfort and usability than outright performance. During our drive at VinFast's test facility, the car felt predictable and easy to drive. The seats, especially across all three rows, were noticeably plush and comfortable, which could become one of its strongest selling points in India's family focused market.

Vietnam And India Share More Than Just Business

Interestingly, VinFast's India entry also reflects the growing strategic relationship between Vietnam and India. During the visit, the company highlighted the cultural and economic links between the two nations, especially around trade, mobility, technology, and sustainability.

As India rapidly transitions toward electrification, Vietnam sees an opportunity to position VinFast as a long-term mobility player rather than simply an imported EV brand.

Inside VinFast's Massive Manufacturing Facility

One of the most impressive parts of the visit was VinFast's primary manufacturing complex near Hai Phong. Built on reclaimed marshland, the 335-hectare facility handles nearly everything under one roof pressing, welding, painting, battery production, and final assembly.

The plant is heavily automated, with over 1,200 robots managing a majority of the manufacturing operations. VinFast says the facility currently has an annual production capacity of around 250,000 vehicles.

VinFast Wants A Strong Retail Presence In India

VinFast also understands that EV success in India depends heavily on after-sales support. The company plans to establish around 75 dealerships and more than 230 service workshops across major Indian cities by the end of 2026.

Additionally, VinFast plans to offer a 10-year vehicle and battery warranty, along with a 75 per cent buyback assurance, to improve long-term ownership confidence.

VinGroup Is Much More Than Just Cars

What makes VinFast particularly unique is the scale of VinGroup itself. In Vietnam, the group's presence stretches far beyond automobiles. It operates large-scale urban developments, malls, hospitals, schools, universities, entertainment parks, resorts, and even equestrian training facilities.

Projects like VinHomes Royal Island and Ocean Park showcase how the group is trying to build integrated ecosystems where mobility, housing, healthcare, education, and entertainment exist together.

Mobility Is At The Centre Of The Ecosystem

Across VinGroup's developments, mobility remains central to the ecosystem. Electric scooters, buses, charging infrastructure, and connected urban transport solutions are deeply integrated into daily life in several parts of Vietnam.

And that is perhaps the biggest takeaway from VinFast's India plans. The company is not approaching India as a traditional carmaker alone. Instead, it is trying to bring an ecosystem driven mobility strategy, one that combines EVs, infrastructure, technology, and long-term ownership confidence into a single narrative.

Whether that strategy works in India remains to be seen. But one thing is certain, VinFast's ambitions are much larger than simply launching another electric SUV.
