Maruti Suzuki India Limited has announced the introductory price of its first electric SUV, the e Vitara, with BaaS (Battery-as-a-Service) at Rs 10.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Along with the announcement, the automaker revealed that supplies of the electric SUV may be limited in the coming months as they work to balance production for both domestic and export markets.

Talking about the details of production, Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer, Marketing & Sales, Maruti Suzuki, revealed that the electric vehicle will be initially manufactured on a shared production line. It is to be noted that the production will take place at the brand's Gujarat facility on a shared line as the Fronx.

"We have a line in Gujarat with a capacity of one lakh units. But we have to cater to export demand, domestic demand and other models like the Fronx. So there will be some calibration till July," Banerjee said in conversation with the media.

To ease the strain on the production line and streamline production, the automaker aims to increase capacity on the line. With the plan in action, the automaker will aim to significantly reduce the waiting period while increasing deliveries of the electric SUV. However, the process will be extended to the second half of the fiscal year.

The manufacturing facility in Gujarat is a significant contributor to exports and supplements the automaker's global presence while handling the domestic market. Multiple high-demand products use the same production lines at the plant, which heightens capacity strain when new models are launched.

Maruti is currently undergoing a comprehensive capacity expansion initiative. The company is gradually increasing its capacity throughout its manufacturing network, including a new greenfield plant in Gujarat and another in Kharkhoda, Haryana. In the coming years, the total installed capacity is anticipated to reach approximately 3 million units per year.
