Meira Kumar elected Lok Sabha Speaker
Press Trust of India, Wednesday June 3, 2009, New Delhi

Meira Kumar on Wednesday made history in the Lok Sabha when she was unanimously elected its Speaker and thus became the first woman to occupy one of the high
Constitutional posts.

Sixty four-year-old Kumar, Congress' Dalit face, a former foreign service official and Union Minister, was elected after a resolution moved by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and seconded by Leader of the House Pranab Mukherjee was approved by a voice vote amidst thumping of desks by the entire House.

Kumar, elected from Sasaram in Bihar in the recent elections, is the daughter of the late Jagjivan Ram.

Earlier, leaders cutting across the political spectrum, including  L K Advani (BJP, Mamata Banerjee (Trinamool Congress), T R Baalu (DMK), Arjun Charan Sethi BJD), Sharad
Yadav (JD-U), Mulayam Singh Yadav (SP), Lalu Prasad (RJD), Ram Sundar Das (JD-U), Sharad Pawar (NCP), Farooq Abdullah (NC) and E Ahmed (Muslim League) also tabled their motions proposing Kumar for the post.

After Gandhi's motion was approved by a voice vote, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Mukherjee and Advani escorted Kumar, who was sitting in the front benches, to the  Speaker's Chair.

After Kumar took the Chair, Singh hailed her election as a historic moment and said her services as a distinguished diplomat, 25 years in Parliament and her role as a Minister would stand her in good stead to execute  her onerous job well.

At last I can proudly say Indian politics has come of age. The unanimous election of Meira Kumar as the LS Speaker goes to speak volumes. Now I can dream of a duty-minded responsible Parliament than what used to be earlier a shame. Now I can dream of a nation where we are in safe hands. Now I can dream of a India, where the common man vote counts. This is the great victory for the Indian Democracy. Hail Mother India!

I thank the Congress party for choosing a lady than too very capable, hardworking and experienced dalit women for the post of speaker. I thank even the opposition for their fullest support. It is a very good lesson for CM like Ms Mayawati as she thinks she only takes care of dalit and no one else infact she uses for her personal gains/votes. Secondly it is my feeling that when a women speaker will host the house atleast the MP will follow the decorum of the house by not using any abusive or personal hurting languages among each other or disrupting the house on small small issue will be not be there ultimately benefitting every one as there will be more fruitful debates, discussions and long standing bills or many bills would be passed
