Australia: 3 Indians attacked by mob of 80
NDTV Correspondent, Tuesday September 15, 2009, Melbourne

Weeks after the External Affairs Minister SM Krishna visited Australia for an assurance that the government would do all it can to safeguard Indian students Down Under, another grim reminder of how little things have changed.

Two students and their uncle were brutally beaten up by a group of 80 people including women in Melbourne's eastern suburb of Epping. The three were heckled as they played pool and then attacked with bottles in a car park when they decided to leave, the attackers shouted go back to India.

One of the victims Sukhdev, who has been in Australia for the six months says that most of the attackers were in their early twenties.

Another victim Mukhtiar Singh is a cab driver and has been living in Australia for the last 22 years. His 21-year-old son was also attacked.

The police has taken pictures of Sukdev at the hospital. Sukhdev has a broken jaw and has trouble eating and drinking. The doctors say that he might have problems with his memory since he got injured on the head. His condition will be monitored over the next few days.

Mukhtiar Singh's son, who is born and brought up in Australia and is a citizen of the country, has suffered a broken tooth in the attack.

The attackers were shouting 'go back to India'. "When they reached the car park to leave the place a huge crowd attacked them and started bashing them brutally. The attackers were in their teens and around twenties," said Onkar Singh, one of the victims' relative.

Onkar claimed the police have informed him that six of the 80 attackers have been arrested.

A Victoria Police spokesperson has reportedly said that before the incident took place, a woman made a racist remark to a group of four males playing pool at Legends Bar.

The attacks come a month after the Australian government assured External Affairs Minister S M Krishna, during his visit here, that Indian students would be protected. Around 30 Indian students were attacked in various cities from June to August. (With PTI inputs)

Dear ND tv news editor, I am from Coimbatore, South India.Thank you for giving the right picture in your article. This is the real scenario happening in Australia.Indians are the highest contributes who are brainwashed in the case education to develop the economy.Running everyday is a pain in Australia. Punjab Indias have created a different impression among Indians here.Working in supermarket and driving a taxi is like a slave.People really show their indirect feeling regarding skin colour when you travel in trains or trams here in Melbourne I have done my course in a University of Ballarat(because its a regional area-5 points) attracting you will not have job. Then I shifted from this country town to Melbourne.Indians are treated as the 3rd rate people in Australia. They make business in student accommodation and its terrible here to get a house and have a peaceful stay in Australia. All the people are racist. The company including IDP and other agents who canvas or market Australia are not trustable here.Part time jobs are avaible for people who cannot even communicate.Australian youngsters most of them do not study but the overseas student community helps the economy here i People get odd jobs in this developing modern country and I am funded by father regarding education and personal expenses from India. My dad had a trauma for the last 2 1/2 years here. Resumes are formatted in the sense of bluffing as if you know cooking or dish-washing or serving liquor. You need for fork lifting and other things as certificate which they will not provide job.People are totally dumb in this country but the govt provides them everything. These are the australian points to fulfill PR in this country as a student. But the 60 points for the course-2 years 30 points for the age 5 points for 2 year study additional for PR is 25 points(if you get 7 Bands in each module in IELTS) which tallys 120 points if its less than 120 points TR- 15 points(if you get 6 Bands in each module in IELTS) you have two options You need apply for TR(12 months to work in the field what you have studied or 18 months unrestricted job VISA and then you get PR here) Optional 5 points for the regional university 10 points for part time job- 1 year min IELTS is the worst kind of a game which they make the student write test and make business.Everytime the student must pay 310 dollars and reduce the band points.Lot of people have written more than 10 times in this test.Australian education system is to create stress and make the student fail and then pass a student to earn more money. This is some kind of humiliation even I have not known in India. People or citizens(from IND 33 years or 20 years partially know the reality, but they cannot accept this a racist backward minded country) as well as the consultants just advertise the country to build the economy so lot of students are misguided like me and ignored So I kindly request to down my points about my experience and the facts written and please discuss in your future. Kind Regards, Pradeep Rajkumar
