Battle of boards in the offing in Maharashtra

Mumbai:

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday was an unlikely venue for class 10 students. Less than 24 hours to their board exam results, the students were there to figure out which way the court will rule on the admission quota.

The central board students have challenged a government decision to reserve 90% seats for Maharashtra Board students.

Says a Maharashtra board student Jeet Shukla: ''I can't eat, or sleep. I thought I will get in, but now I will have to wait another 5 days.''

Another student Jimit Soni says: ''The quota is justified because their evaluation system is different. So they always end up getting more marks than us.''

The court has said the admissions can't begin till its final verdict on Monday.

The central board students are also angry. Because if the court does not rule in their favour, in spite of doing well they may not get a college of their choice.

Says Ankit Modi, an ICSE student: ''I have got 93% but I am unsure of getting into my college of choice.''

Yash Muthian says, ''This should only be done on merit. Why should WE suffer?''

The courtroom seemed more like a classroom as students latched on to every spoken word. But what's perhaps most unfortunate is that at a time when they should be planning their careers. They are getting caught in legal tangles and political divisiveness and considering their future classmates as their current enemies.
