Childhood friends stage heist drama, arrested for misleading cops

New Delhi: A 22-year-old girl was arrested along with her childhood friend for enacting a drama that some unidentified men broke into the house and decamped with Rs 5 lakh in cash and jewellery worth Rs 1 crore, police said on Thursday.

Aditi and Ankit (24) were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly staging the drama.  Aditi had alleged that she was dragged and her hands were tied by three masked men who then emptied the almirah of cash and valuables and escaped through the rear door by cutting the door handle and locks.

Since entry through rear gate was very difficult, police zeroed in on Aditi and conducted a background check on the inmates and the employees of the house.

During investigation, they found out that Aditi had a long-standing friendship with her childhood classmate Ankit Bengani who had been meeting her in the past by using the rear entry gate.

"The suspicion was strengthened by the discovery of the keys of the two locks of the rear entry gate inside the bedroom of Aditi's father," a police official said.

Ankit was arrested from Jaipur yesterday morning and he revealed that the entire heist was masterminded by Aditi and that the electric cutter and the bag for ferrying the stolen cash and valuables were purchased by Ankit from Jaipur and Laxmi Nagar in the national capital respectively.

Ankit told police that he was given entry inside the house by Aditi who had opened the rear door and that she kept a close watch on the CCTV to ensure that the operation went on smoothly, the official said.

However, the motive was not known.
