A baggage handler working at Norfolk International Airport in Virginia was arrested on March 3, 2026, after authorities alleged he stole high-value items from Spirit Airlines passengers' checked luggage on separate flights. The case came to the limelight after multiple travelers reported missing belongings following trips from Norfolk to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

As per reports, investigators relied on airport surveillance footage and employee access records to identify the suspect. Officials emphasized that the incidents appear isolated and not part of a broader theft operation. Some stolen items were later recovered, while the case sparked renewed concerns about luggage security during airline travel.

Theft Reports From Two Spirit Airlines Flights

According to WAVY.com, the alleged thefts occurred in September and November 2025 and involved two different Spirit Airlines passengers traveling on the same route. In the first report, a traveler told police his luggage appeared to have been rummaged through, and a pair of gray Nike Air Jordan 5 Off-White Muslin sneakers valued at about $1,000 was missing.

Nearly two months later, a second passenger reported that a multi-colored Moncler puffer jacket worth approximately $2,000 had disappeared from his checked bag after a November flight. In both cases, the passengers discovered the missing items only after arriving at their destination.

Surveillance Footage And Evidence Review

Court documents cited by WAVY.com state that investigators reviewed airport security footage and employee badge access logs to determine who had handled the bags. Authorities concluded that Sterlyn Southall, a Portsmouth, Virginia resident working as a baggage handler on behalf of Spirit Airlines, had access to the luggage from both flights.

Police alleged Southall was seen manipulating passenger bags in what court records described as a “manner consistent with theft.” Investigators later observed him in possession of items matching those reported stolen.

In statements reported by People Magazine, authorities said Southall was allegedly seen concealing stolen sneakers underneath his jacket while leaving a secure airport area. In another instance, he was reportedly seen wearing the Moncler jacket that had been reported missing by a passenger. These observations, along with internal airline reports and surveillance evidence, led to his arrest on March 3.

Southall has since been charged with grand larceny in connection with the two incidents.

Airline And Airport Response

Spirit Airlines confirmed to People Magazine that Southall is no longer employed by the company.
“We are aware of the arrest of a vendor agent for alleged larceny at Norfolk International Airport,” a Spirit Airlines spokesperson said. “The vendor's employee is no longer working with Spirit.”

A representative for Norfolk International Airport also addressed the situation, telling People Magazine:

“The airport is thankful for those who reported their suspicions, which in turn allowed our airport police department to both build a case and reunited many of the affected items with their owners.”

Airport officials stressed that Southall was not an employee of the Norfolk Airport Authority and said there was no indication of a larger theft ring.

The accused is scheduled to appear before a grand jury on May 6, according to WAVY.com. Attempts by local media to contact him using the address listed in court documents were unsuccessful.

Airport officials reiterated advice for travelers, urging passengers to avoid placing valuables in checked luggage whenever possible.
