Travelling to Mizoram, once a long and tiring journey, has just got a whole lot simpler with the new railway line. The introduction of the Bairabi-Sairang railway line has revolutionised connectivity in the Northeast, bringing Mizoram's Sairang on India's rail map for the first time. This engineering marvel spans 51.38 km, featuring 48 tunnels and 55 major bridges. The town is about 18 km from Aizawl, and it takes roughly an hour to reach the capital city. With travel time drastically reduced, Aizawl is now just a train ride away from major cities.

Bairabi-Sairang Railway Route:
The first Rajdhani Express linking Sairang (Mizoram) to Anand Vihar Terminal (Delhi) was launched in September 2025. This train traverses an extensive and diverse route, making stops at 18 prominent stations. Major stops along the way include Bairabi, Hailakandi, Badarpur, New Haflong, Hojai, Guwahati, Rangiya, Barpeta Road, New Bongaigaon, New Cooch Behar, New Jalpaiguri, Malda Town, Sahibganj, Bhagalpur, Jamalpur, Patna, Pt. D.D. Upadhyay Junction and Kanpur Central.
By connecting Mizoram to Delhi through Assam, North Bengal, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh, this route spans varied landscapes and vast distances.
In addition to the Rajdhani Express, a recently introduced tri-weekly train connects Kolkata to Sairang in Mizoram. The journey takes around 31 hours to reach Sairang and provides Mizoram with its first direct express connectivity to West Bengal.
Meanwhile, the Guwahati-Sairang Express is a daily intercity service connecting Guwahati in Assam with Sairang in Mizoram. Inaugurated in September 2025, it provides Mizoram's capital, Aizawl, with its first direct rail link to the national network via the new Bairabi-Sairang rail line.
Before you plan a trip to Mizoram, don't forget to get yourself an Inner Line Permit (ILP). All Indian citizens need an ILP to enter Mizoram. It can be obtained at stations like Sairang, at Lengpui Airport and at various check gates and government offices in other states. You can also get the permit online.
