A trip to one of Italy's most famous historical sites turned into serious trouble for a Scottish visitor. The 51-year-old tourist was caught leaving Pompeii with stolen artefacts hidden in his backpack, sparking outrage and legal action from Italian authorities. According to The Independent UK, the man was found carrying 6 fragments (5 stones and a brick) that he had illegally picked up during a guided evening tour of the ancient Roman city.
A vigilant guide spotted him collecting pieces of pavement and immediately alerted the police. The stolen items were later recovered and returned to the archaeological park.
Facing Heavy Penalties For Theft From The Historical Landmark
Italian authorities confirmed the tourist has been reported for aggravated theft, a serious offence under their cultural heritage laws. If convicted, he could face up to six years in prison and a maximum fine of 1,500 euros (approximately Rs 1.5 lakh).
Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, praised the quick action of the guide, security staff, and Carabinieri (one of the national police forces of Italy), saying their vigilance was crucial in protecting one of the world's most valuable historical treasures.

What Is The 'Curse' Of Pompeii
Beyond legal consequences, stealing from Pompeii comes with an unusual warning. The ancient city, buried by Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, is believed to bring misfortune to those who steal its relics.
In one such instance, in 2020, a Canadian woman returned artefacts she had stolen 15 years earlier, claiming they had brought her nothing but bad luck. She confessed that the "cursed" items had caused years of personal and family misfortunes.
Protecting The History Of The Ancient Roman City
Pompeii remains one of the world's most significant archaeological sites, attracting millions of visitors each year. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the only archaeological site in the world that provides a complete picture of an ancient Roman city.
Authorities continue to urge tourists to respect the ruins and avoid disturbing what remains of this unique glimpse into the Roman life of the past.
