Somdev, Bopanna crash out of Aegon Championship

New Delhi: After a high at the French Open, Somdev Devvarman hit a low as he could not cross the first hurdle at the AEGON Championship in London while compatriot Rohan Bopanna too witnessed a similar fate, crashing out in the opening round of the Gerry Weber Open in Germany.

Somdev, who became the first Indian to qualify for the French Open main draw in 13 years, lost 1-6, 4-6 to American Mardy Fish at the 79,260-euro grass court event at Queen's club in London, according to information received here.

Fish will be up against the winner of another first round match between Evgeny Korolev of Kazakhstan and 13th seed Marcel Granollers of Spain.

Somdev had on Monday rose to a career-best 104th in the ATP rankings.

Bopanna, meanwhile, fought his heart out before succumbing to a 4-6, 6-7(11) defeat at the hands of Thiemo De Bakker of the Netherlands in the 750,000-euro Gerry Weber Open in Halle.

In the doubles event, Bopanna and Pakistan's Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi will open their campaign against German-Slovak duo of Philipp Marx and Igor Zelenay.
