Pune engineer arrested for allegedly raping Iranian woman

Pune: Mohit Joshi, a mechanical engineer from Sopanbaug in Hadapsar, has been arrested on charges of raping a 25-year-old Iranian woman.

Joshi was produced before the magistrate in the Shivajinagar court by the Mundhwa police and was remanded to police custody till January 18.  

The woman, who is pursuing higher education in a Kothrud-based college in the city, had lodged the complaint.

Joshi had allegedly refused to marry her after having had sex with her on January 1 at her residence in Mundhwa.

According to the police, the woman had come to Pune about a year and a half ago for pursuing her higher education.

She met Joshi, who hails from Nainital, three months prior to the incident.

The woman in her complaint, has said on January 1 around 1.30 am, the suspect had sex with her at her residence after promising to marry her.

After the incident, the suspect had switched off his mobile phone.

"The woman had submitted the suspect's photograph and his mobile number to the police but she was unaware of his local address. After registration of the complaint, the suspect's mobile phone was kept under surveillance, which helped to trace him," said an officer from the Mundhwa police station.
