Mumbai: Family awaits body of son from Qatar, seeks probe into death

Mumbai: 65-year-old Surjit Kaur has been fighting a courageous battle for the past two weeks to get the body of her dead son.

38-year-old Jitendar had gone to Qatar last month. However, on November 26, a representative from a labour contractor company in Mumbai, that had sent Jitendar to Qatar, informed his family that he had died due to acute heart and respiratory failure when he reached there.

His family, however, suspects foul play.

"What has happened to my son? Has he died of a heart attack, or is he in the ICU? Tell us something at least," says Mrs Kaur.

The family has approached the government, written letters to External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid and Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vyalar Ravi. Their pleas, however, have fallen on deaf ears.

Dilip Khalsa, Jitendar's brother says, "We suspect that his death was not natural and so we have asked for the CCTV footage of the place where he died and the post mortem report. We have got nothing so far."

The labour contractor company has refused to speak to NDTV. Desperate for answers, the family hopes the government will come to their aid.
