Income Tax officer held in refund scam in Mumbai

Mumbai: The Economic Offence Wing (EOW) arrested a class-II officer from the Income-Tax department with three others for an alleged scam of I-T refund orders. The scam amounting to more than Rs1.89 crore took place between 2007 and 2009 with the help of 250 refund orders issued in the name of fake tax payers.

Police said the arrested officer, Prayag Sakharam Gajre was a class-II officer in ward-2 of the Income-Tax office under the Income Tax commisionerate, Thane. Three other accused were Yogesh Ramchandra Shinde, Dinesh Ramchandra Shinde and Ramkrushna Narayan Walavalkar. Yogesh was a security guard and Dinesh is his brother, while Ramkrushna worked as an agent involved in this fraud.

The scam that took place at different ward offices under Thane I-T commissionerate. All those orders were encashed through Dombivli Urban Sahakari Patsanstha, Dombivli. The matter came to light in 2009. During investigation, EOW officers arrested the three accused, except Gajre, a few months ago. Further investigations led police to Gajre on Tuesday and 56 such orders were issued in his ward.
