Mumbai:
A 15 year old girl in Mumbai committed suicide after she and her mother were dragged to a local police station on the allegation that her mother had an illicit affair.
The incident happened in a slum pocket of Sewree in central Mumbai on Wednesday night.
The accused Jaya, who is the wife of the man with whom the victim's mother had the alleged illicit affair, dragged the victim and her mother Muttulakshmi to the Sewree police station on Wednesday night, reported PTI. Jaya was allegedly accompanied by three other women, PTI adds.
Shocked and traumatised the girl committed suicide by consuming poison in the wee hours of Thursday. After consuming poison she set herself ablaze after which her neighbours removed her clothes while trying to save her. She was rushed to JJ Hospital in the city but succumbed to her injuries.
She has given a dying declaration stating the same.
"We have arrested Jaya, wife of the person with whom the victim's mother Muttulakshmi supposedly had an illicit affair and we have booked her under section 306 (Abetment of suicide) of Indian Penal Code," Assistant Commissioner of Police Dilip Waghmare told PTI.
The victim's father is a taxi driver.
According to PTI, police have arrested a neighbour for abetment to suicide, but her alleged accomplices are absconding and yet to be arrested.
