Zoya Akhtar's The Archies is making all the right noise, ahead of its release. In addition to the fresh star cast, fans are also thrilled to watch some iconic retro styles come to life. From Betty's voluminous curls and Veronica's unique hairstyles to bringing back the cottagecore trend, The Archies has struck a chord with fashionistas. A few days ahead of its big release, Avan Contractor, the celebrity hairstylist to the cast of The Archies, interacted with NDTV Swirlster exclusively. Talking about her inspiration behind the looks of each of The Archies' characters, Avan revealed that the comic book was her first reference. Avan said, “I think the first inspiration was the original characters of the comics. We wanted to maintain the essence in terms of their look and vibe. At the same time, we needed to adapt it to the Indian context and also to the youthfulness of the characters. So we had the luxury to play with hair colour.”
When asked who she thinks has fantastic hair even off-screen, Avan Contractor said, “It will be hard to pick favourites. Kareena [Kapoor] has great hair and it is always a joy to work with her. Of course, for me, my top favourites are all the kids from The Archies. I have a very long working relationship with Aamir [Khan]. We have always done different things for each movie of his.”
Next, she was asked if she thinks that men's hairstyles have evolved for the better or the worse. Calling it a “tricky question,”, Avan Contractor said, “I feel it has evolved for sure. The evolution has been about men being more aware and conscious about their grooming.”
Talking about who she thinks aces every hairstyle experiment in Bollywood, Avan Contractor said, “Currently, definitely Deepika [Padukone], Alia [Bhatt] and Kareena [Kapoor]. I feel Aamir [Khan] always aces it.”
Avan Contractor not only talked about trending hairstyles and Bollywood celebs but also gave a few hair care tips. Addressing the million-dollar question of how often one must wash their hair in a week, Avan said, “As a stylist, I tell all my clients, it is better to keep my scalp clean. For me, I feel every alternate day is ideal.”
In the end, Avan Contractor signed off with the one haircare tip she swears by - “A great haircut can take you a long way,” she says. We couldn't agree more.
