The idea of matching your top to your trousers and even to your jacket sometimes can seem slightly boring. But celebrities, stylists and fashion bloggers have shown us over and over again that it's not the case. We've seen the look done right on Sonam Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Blake Lively and Kim Kardashian and while A-listers have a battery of stylists to help them look great every day, there's no reason why you can't steal their style from looking Instagram and pictures. Monotone dressing is here to stay and here's how you can rock at it, just like your favourite stars.
1. Accessorize wisely
There is no hard and fast rule when it comes to accessories. You can match the colour of your outfit exactly or you can pick a complementary shade. Trust your instinct with them - try different ones in front of the mirror. It'll help you judge the look as a whole. Just the way we do when we're looking at celebrities. Case in point - Sonam Kapoor.
2. Play with hemlines
When you're wearing separates in the same colour and same fabric, there is no texture variation in your outfit. What can help here is playing with hemlines and layers. They'll take your outfit to a new level, just like Alia Bhatt's. You don't need to bundle up - but adding a third piece can be the difference between your outfit looking stylish and like a uniform.
3. Just jackets
Sometimes your monotone outfit can be just a simple dress or a jumpsuit, which can look a little on the simple side. In such cases, throwing on a jacket or coat in the same shade can make your outfit look absolutely fabulous and oh so chic. If you don't believe us, believe Priyanka Chopra.
4. Try bold colors
Yes, it's an easy trend when you try it with basic colours. Black, nude, brown - they're pretty doable. But what will really make your stand out is when you try a bold colour monotone outfit, just like Blake Lively. Our tip for pulling off a look like this? Always make sure your clothes are ironed to perfection. Even a single crease would be noticeable when it comes to monotone.
5. Throw some shade into it
Monotone is for everyone but no one quite does it as well as Kim Kardashian. Take a tip from her and try mixing similar shades together. This does work better with neutral colours, of course. And we're pretty certain you'll have enough options in your closet to try this out already.
6. The classic white
Nothing is more elegant than a classic white monotone outfit. Proof? Deepika Padukone. Just go through your closet and pick out all of your favourite whites - maybe a pair of jeans, a loose shirt and sneakers. And that's all you need for your most impressive spring-summer outfit ever - a whole lot better than florals, any day.
Let us know if you end up trying any of these looks.
