Is it the scent of Indian roses in the air wistfully cascading over Delhi's streets during spring or dewdrops on grass like icicles at the break of dawn that makes this city unlike any other in the world? There is a bittersweet sense of nostalgia in every corner of Delhi that holds memories and stories of a time gone by, painted with urban anecdotes over it that somehow non-interferingly blend with the past settings. It is in the midst of lost fond memories that designer Karan Torani is happily helping us relive those blissful days through his fashion label - Torani. It is also in the background of his art of story-telling through his designs that he has successfully opened his doors to his flagship store in the swanky locality of Mehrauli - Delhi's very own wedding shopping hub. Dressed with fragrant flowers canopying over its open courtyard leading up to his gorgeous new store that houses some of his best creations from collections such as 'Sindhi Tent House', 'Jhooley' and 'Chaap Tilak', this store opening was as inviting as the invitation itself. Karan Torani, the man behind the magic talks to us about how personal insights and familial history drives him to create something fabulous out of mere material memory.

1. You have created a benchmark in fashion in such a short span of time, what is your advice to the newer generation of designers?
Karan Torani: Tell an honest story and stick by it. Find purpose and meaning in design so you, and your creations are remembered long after you are gone.

2. You stick to the classics when everyone seems to be in this rat race of chasing trends, why do you think that's so necessary in today's time?
Karan Torani: It's important to remember where we come from. As a design philosophy, Torani always follows the path of timelessness. The idea to rekindle our past and find beauty in what was once forgotten has always been my desire. It's like reading Gulzaar Saheb's poetry with a cup of chai on a winter evening or listening to Mehdi Hassan Saheb's infamous ghazals; one can never get enough of it.
3. What's your all-time favourite ethnic fashion trend?
Karan Torani: A sheer white sari with some red roses in the hair. Indian Glamour at its best.
4. A play of colours or neutral tones of whites and beige, what is Karan Torani's style language?
Karan Torani: If I could, I'd only make clothes in the shades of ivory. There is a humble richness in that color. It somehow defines my expression of timeless elegance. It's glamorous yet stays away from an overtly opulent statement.
