If there's one thing we know about Sonam Kapoor by now, it's that the girl isn't afraid to experiment with fashion. Thinking too hard about getting it right isn't something Sonam seems to waste time on too often and we have to say, in her case it seems to pay off. While most A-list actors like herself usually opt for more established or well-known designers, Sonam Kapoor is often seen wearing garments from upcoming fashion labels or designers, many of whom we only know about thanks to Sonam. There have been times when we haven't been too hot for Sonam's choice of clothes, but more often, Sonam Kapoor finds a way to make our jaws drop in awe of her edgy fashion choices.
Here are 10 edgy outfits according to us, that only Sonam Kapoor could have pulled off and looked this good in.
The Short Pant-Suit
Who else but Sonam Kapoor could have pulled off this short pant-suit without looking like a complete fashion disaster? Sonam attended the Filmfare Awards in this rather out of the box power suit by Vera Wang. She paired her outfit with shoes from Gucci and a bag from Elie Saab. With sleek back hair and gold earrings, Sonam looked every bit the fashion diva that she is. She was of course, styled by her sister Rhea Kapoor. Sonam posted a picture of herself in this outfit stating that she likes to push the envelope when it comes to red carpet dressing. Well, Sonam, we have to agree that you did just that.
The Tie-Up Kurta Set
Talking about edgy, check out this kurta set that Sonam wore for the promotions of her upcoming film, PadMan. It looks like a regular kurta with palazzos until you realise that instead of a dupatta, Sonam's kurta from designer Rimzim Dadu has an attached tie around dupatta that goes around the bust and gets tied at the back around the waist. Sonam's fishtail braid and striped palazzos definitely add to Sonam's avant-garde look.
The Playful Yellow Dress
Sonam Kapoor showed up at the HT Style Awards this year in a yellow tube dress with an unfinished hemline and a large, puffy sleeve with a train on one side. On anyone else, this could have easily looked like a Teen Vogue cover gone wrong, but not on Sonam. With her sleek hair and choker necklace, Sonam made this Hyun Mi Nielsen dress look just the right amount of edgy. It's hard not to give her extra points for wearing the colour of the season with such panache.
The Ruffled Shirt
Mind you, we're not just talking about your average ruffles across the front of a shirt; we're talking big wing-like ruffles at the top of your sleeves. Once again for PadMan promotions, Sonam wore a classic combination of a white shirt with black pants. But this shirt from Kojak Studio was no ordinary white shirt. The large frilled addition to the top part of the sleeves made it, like a lot of Sonam's other clothes, different.
The Asymmetrical Oversized Jacket
It is no secret that Sonam is often styled by her sister Rhea Kapoor. Therefore some credit for Sonam's cutting edge wardrobe must go there too. For another PadMan promotional event, Rhea styled Sonam in an asymmetrical, oversized jacket from Georgian fashion designer Janashia and culottes from the edgy Japanese fashion label Comme des Garcons. One good look at the picture and you'll be convinced that it ought to be here too.
The Oversized Layered White Shirt
"You can't go wrong with a white shirt and red lip!" When Sonam Kapoor herself declared that with the caption for this picture, who are we to deny it? Sonam seems to love her white shirts, but with a twist. This time, Sonam headed to the airport in an oversized white shirt from Nabil Nayal that seemed to have many different layers of fabric attached to it. Her round retro shades and red lips definitely make the cut for Sonam's edgy style list.
Colourful Layering
Winter urges most of us to bring out all our clothes and wear as many layers as we can possibly get on. Sonam Kapoor is no different, but obviously, even her layers comprise of the most fashionable items. Sonam's ensemble with all its colours and prints could have easily looked like a costume gone wrong on someone else, but on Sonam it just looked like another statement outfit. Her red, yellow and pink outfit from Zoe Champion Knitwear was definitely a winner.
The Silk Suit
Or rather a silk suit wrapped around with a white shirt. It may sound bizarre, but what's even more bizarre is that Sonam Kapoor actually looks good in this rather innovative outfit. She manages to look fashionable rather than foolish. How she does this is beyond our comprehension.
The Asymmetrical Kaftan
As if the colour red wasn't enough to make her stand out, the asymmetrical silhouette of this Payal Khandwala outfit with a thick belt around the waist made sure that Sonam stood up to her "fashion icon" stature. Tell us you don't think that anyone else would have ended up looking like a Japanese geisha/Jedi warrior, except not in a good way?
The Short-Ruffled Sari
We've seen pants cut short into culottes, a maxi skirt into a midi-skirt, but talk about a sari being cut short! And that too with a ruffled bottom and worn with brogues. Yes, Sonam Kapoor tried even this; and no points for guessing, she looked amazing. Her unusual sari and blouse from Anavila Misra definitely frees our mind of any doubts, if there were any, that Sonam is the ultimate in experimental fashion.
