West Bengal Human Rights Commission seeks report on Irish national's alleged rape

Kolkata: The West Bengal Human Rights Commission on Monday directed the city police to conduct a probe into the alleged rape of an Irish woman in Kolkata and submit a report within three weeks.

"Taking cognizance of media reports, the commission on Monday directed the police commissioner to conduct a thorough probe in the matter and submit a report within three weeks," said commission Joint Secretary Sujay Kumar Haldar.

The 21-year-old Irish woman, working for a Darjeeling-based NGO, and residing in the city, on June 1 lodged a complaint that she was raped by her male friend at his residence in the city's Kalighat area.

The accused, Sujoy Mitra, was arrested on the same day and presented before a city court on Sunday, which remanded him to police custody till June 5.

The rights panel earlier had expressed concern over the growing instances sexual assaults on women in the state.
