A city court on Tuesday extended the police remand of six arrested directors of the AMRI hospital by three days in response to a plea filed by the Kolkata Police. Ninety one people had been killed in a fire at the hospital on Dec 9.
Chief Judicial Magistrate of the Alipur court S M Shahnawaz extended the remand of RS Goenka, SK Todi, Prashant Goenka, Manish Goenka, Ravi Todi and Dayanand Agarwal in police custody till December 23, when they will be produced before the court again.
A number of people gathered outside the court shouted slogans as the accused were being led into the court lock-up from a police vehicle amidst heavy security.
Another AMRI director RS Agarwal, who was undergoing treatment at a private hospital, was produced before the court yesterday after a team of government doctors had declared him fit on Sunday.
However, when produced in front of the court, Mr Agarwal pleaded severe illness, after which the Magistrate sent him to state-run SSKM Hospital and directed the hospital authorities to file a report on his health condition.
All the accused have been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and negligence.
Trinamool Congress MP and lawyer Kalyan Banerjee, who is pleading for the prosecution as a special public prosecutor, today prayed for extension of police remand of the six directors stating that they need to be further examined by officers of the detective department of Kolkata Police.
