Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan today called for regulating "blind, extreme and unscientific environmental fundamentalism" and said his government's objective is to protect the nature without stagnating the state's development.

In a Facebook post, marking the World Environment Day, he said, "The laws related to environment conservation should be made stricter. At the same time, the misuse of raising environment conservation issues should be checked. The blind, extreme and unscientific environmental fundamentalism should also be regulated."

"Environment conservation without stagnating development is the objective of our government. These two (environment conservation and development) are two sides of the same coin," Mr Vijayan said.

Asserting that there is need for more research systems to deal with environment issues, the chief minister said experts, who made in-depth studies in the area, are the ones who have to give their opinion on the subject.

Issues like garbage treatment, resource depletion, misuse of energy, illegal exploitation of natural resources and unscientific use of water should be studied carefully, he said, adding, government was ready to formulate laws to address and resolve them, if needed.
