Three arrested in Mira road gangrape case

Mumbai:

Mumbai's northern suburb of Mira Road is reacting with shock and horror. A 19-year-old girl was gangraped not once but twice by her own boyfriend, his brother, and five of their friends.

Three of them, including the boyfriend, have been arrested and the police is on the hunt for the others.

There were protests by Virar residents outside the police station, demanding that the accused in the gangrape of the college student be punished.

On May 14, the victim's boyfriend of six months took her to a lodge in Virar, north of Mumbai. There, he and four of his friends raped her the first time. They also recorded it on a mobile phone, and later circulated it.

A fortnight later, his brother blackmailed the victim using the MMS clip, took her back to the lodge, and raped her along with a friend of his.

"Since the incident took place over a month ago, we will not be able to find the kind of medical evidence needed for rape cases. We will have to rely on circumstantial evidence and largely depend on the recording that we have," said Maithili Jha, Superintendent of Police.

The police say that the victim finally registered a complaint after she realised the MMS was being circulated.

Now the police are hunting for the four missing men, using their images in the MMS clip. They are also investigating if the girl was drugged.
