Tamil Nadu's marital politics

Tamil Nadu's marital politics
Chennai:

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Karunanidhi appears allergic to the minority tag. So when AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa kept attaching that label to his government, he responded by saying that he would address the unmarried Amma as Mrs Jayalalithaa.

"How can she say this is a minority government? As long as she says that -- I will say this."

Jayalithaa has called this a grave injustice to womanhood. Others seem to agree.

Women rights activist Sudha Ramalingam says: "A Chief Minister who himself is not a monogamist referring to the Opposition leader's past and matrimonial status is very cheap."

The animosity between the Dravidian archrivals is so bitter they don't even greet each other on birthdays. Even the seating arrangement in the state assembly was changed so that they don't face each other.

While it may augur well for politicians in Tamil Nadu to learn a lesson or two from their counterparts in other states, the common man wants them to stop their petty politics and focus on issues that matter to them.
