Punjab Chief Minister Taunts In-Laws Caught in Corruption Scandal

Punjab Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal addressing a convocation in Amritsar

Amritsar, Punjab: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today taunted the Majithia family by saying that maximum benefit of power was provided to them by the state government.

Satyajit Singh Majithia's son, Bikram Singh Majithia is a cabinet minister in the state, his daughter Harsimrat Kaur, is a Union cabinet minister, and is married to the chief minister's son and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Mr Badal had come to address the 108th annual convocation of the Khalsa College in Amritsar. Mr Majithia is the president of the college's governing council.

When asked for financial help by Mr Majithia to improve teaching conditions in the college, Mr Badal said, "Majithia Sahib I have given you maximum as your son Bikram Majithia is a cabinet Minister in the Punjab government, your son-in-law Sukhbir Singh Badal is Deputy Chief Minister in the Punjab government and your daughter Harsimrat Kaur Badal is a minister in the Centre".

The comment came as a surprise for the entire audience and high profile dignitaries including Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley who was attending the ceremony as chief guest. Other leaders present included Sukhbir Singh Badal, Bikram Singh Majithia and Harsimrat Kaur Badal.

Bikram Singh Majithia, who is the younger brother of Mrs Badal, faces allegations of having links with certain non-resident Indians (NRIs) who have been accused of international money laundering related to the drugs racket. Last year, he was questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the multi-crore international synthetic drugs racket busted by Punjab Police in 2013.
