Police alone can't isolate Maoists: Karat

Police alone can't isolate Maoists: Karat
New Delhi: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) held a meeting in New Delhi on Sunday to 'take stock of the overall political situation after the Lok Sabha polls'.

CPM general secretary Prakash Karat later briefed the media persons about the meeting in New Delhi.

Speaking on the increasing threat of Naxalism across the country, Karat said, "We've called upon the people to resist, and we'll fight them back. We won't rely on police and administration. They alone can't do the job."

He also blamed the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre for not doing enough for security. "The situation in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand is particularly serious, which is the result of long-term neglect, not just in terms of security but development of people like the problems faced by the tribals. The government needs to come up with a package that takes care of all issues," Karat said.

He, however, made no comments about the recent prisoner swap incident when a policeman Attindranath Dutta was released by Maoists in exchange of the release of some tribal women.

But when asked about dealing with the growing Naxal menace, Karat agreed with the government way. "If they (Maoists) are resorting to violence then steps have to be taken," Karat said.

The CPM general secretary also spoke about the Indo-China border issue. "The prime ministers of India and China, after the meeting, have agreed to settle the border issues, but we should see that we are working on a permanent settlement on the border issue," Karat said.

However, he made it clear that as far as dispute is concerned Arunachal Pradesh is a part of India.
