Odisha Urges People Not To Panic Buy Fuel

Amid a surge in rush at fuel stations across Odisha, the state government has asked oil marketing companies to ensure that no retail outlet runs dry and urged people not to indulge in panic buying.

After holding an urgent meeting with stakeholders, Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister KC Patra assured people that the state has adequate stock of petrol and diesel for the next 13 days.

The minister said the daily demand for fuel has increased by around 50 per cent over the past two to three days following rumours of a possible disruption in supply.

"Odisha is the state from where fuel is supplied to Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh. When there is no scarcity in those states, how can Odisha face a shortage? Fuel scarcity is only a rumour," Patra said.

He said many consumers who usually purchase petrol worth Rs 200 a day were buying fuel worth Rs 500 and queuing up at petrol pumps. Some people were also seen carrying jerrycans and containers to stock fuel.

Despite Fuel Hike, Is India Shielding Consumers Better Than Rich Nations?

Since the Iran war disrupted the Strait of Hormuz, the world's most critical oil route, fuel prices have surged across countries. Many governments passed on the full impact to consumers within days. India did not.

For nearly 76 days, public sector oil companies held prices steady, even as crude oil crossed $100 per barrel. Losses piled up. Under-recoveries touched around Rs 1,000 crore every day.

While several nations adjusted prices by 20, 40, even 90 per cent, India absorbed the shock for over two months.

"Time For Economic Patriotism": BJP As Congress Criticises Fuel Price Hike

The Congress hinted that with the polls over, the fuel price hike was imminent. The move, the Congress claimed, is bound to lead to further inflation, and growth estimates will be lowered considerably.

The BJP, however, accused the Opposition party of politicising the issue when the world is facing an energy crisis.

BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari claimed that India is witnessing about a 3.5 per cent hike in fuel prices, less than several countries across the globe. He defended the price hike, citing the Brent crude price, which is hovering over $100 per barrel.

Petrol, Diesel Price LIVE: BJP Says India Recorded Smallest Increase Among Major Economies

The BJP has defended the fuel price hike and said India recorded the "smallest material increase" among all major economies amid the Iran war.

"The surge in global fuel prices since the outbreak of the West Asia conflict offers a revealing comparison of how different countries have managed economic shocks. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s most critical oil chokepoint, and the prolonged disruption of shipments sent Brent crude soaring above $100 per barrel through much of April and early May. Across the world, consumers have felt the impact directly at fuel stations. But India stands out as a striking exception," the BJP's Amit Malviya said on X.

He said while countries like Myanmar, Malaysia, Pakistan and the US saw a hike of more than 40 per cent, India increased the prices by only 3 per cent.
