Mangalore air crash: What is a table-top airport?

New Delhi: The Mangalore airport is considered tricky for aircraft landings and take offs, particularly in the rainy season because it is what is called a 'table top' airport.

It's called a 'Table Top' airport because of the gorges surrounding it. The runway is on top of a hill and is surrounded by deep gorges that are just 30 metres from the runway. There are tropical forests on the three sides of the mountain.

Some aviation experts say the airport is not safe because it does not have an overshoot area, which means that if a pilot makes a mistake and lands too far down the runway, then it's a disaster because there's no extra room for error.
