Maharashtra prepares to tackle cyclone

Mumbai: It's raining heavily in Mumbai as the threat of cyclone Phyan persists. Maharashtra government has asked all schools to shut for the day. Children already in school are being sent home as soon as possible and afternoon session not to be held.

Government offices have also been asked to shut by 2 pm.

"The impact of the cyclone is expected in Mumbai, Thane and Konkan. We have asked schools and offices to shut by afternoon. Extra buses and trains will be put into service. Emergency services have been activated," Chief Minister Ashok Chavan has said.

Nine rescue teams have been moved to coastal areas and people in low-lying areas have been told to move in case water rises.

Arrangements are also being made to put extra pumps in place to tackle water logging.

Extra local trains will also be running after 2pm to take people home.
