J&K: 12 militants killed in 3 days

Rajouri: Usually, the heavy snow in the LoC mountain passes in winter means a fall in infiltration figure. But this year, it has made no difference - a sign of the militants' growing strength and skill.

The Army too has stepped up operations. In just the past 3 days, 12 militants have been killed in continuing operations in various places near the border.

`"Eight terrorists have been killed so far. Out of which five were killed on Saturday. In addition to this, two terrorists each have been killed in Kalakote in Rajouri district and two in Kishtwar,'' Brigadier Gurmit Singh (15 Corps) said.

The first major infiltration bid this year has been foiled by the Army.

In Keran sector in Kupwara, eight militants have been killed in a three-day operation. While on the other side of Pirpanjal, two encounters continue in Rajouri and Kishtwar districts where so far four militants have been killed.

Infiltration is up, and a large number of militants are ready to cross over even though the snow is yet to melt.

"This is a high altitude area with rugged terrain and still there is 12 to 15 feet of snow and LOC fencing is still in a submerged state,'' says Brigadier Gurmit Singh (15 Corps).
