Congress MLA Ajay Singh said in Bhopal on Monday that he was not the "official spokesperson" for his father Arjun Singh who was the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister when Bhopal Gas tragedy occurred in December 1984.

"I am Arjun Singh's son and I greatly admire and respect my father," Ajay told PTI.

He said he would not like to comment on the silence being maintained by his father on the issue of why and how Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson was released soon after the disaster.

"It is for my father to decide when and what to say and I have nothing to do with it," Ajay said.

The Congress MLA said it was his duty to stand by his father in these trying times and he was performing it to the best of his ability.

Ajay said although he was not born in Bhopal, he loved the city and added that his grief for the disaster victims was as much as that of any other citizen of Bhopal.

"The city has given everything to me and I fondly remember my school days in Bhopal," he said.

The Congress MLA said in 1983, Union Carbide had given a donation of Rs 1.50 lakh to the Churhat Children's Welfare Society, run by him but added that three or four other companies had also donated money.

"At that time, I was not even an MLA and my position was that of an ordinary Congress worker," Ajay said.
