Illiteracy makes Naxalism attractive: Slain cop's wife

New Delhi: The massacre of 24 jawans in West Midnapore and the killing of 11 villagers in Bihar, once again reiterate what the Prime Minister and Home Minister have been saying, Naxals are the biggest threat to internal security.

While there is big debate over the entire issue of Naxalism, Sunita Induwar, the wife of slain cop, Francis Induwar, says the government has to help backward classes, so that they do not get attracted to terrorism. She still wants her son to become a police officer.

She was speaking on our show, We the People:

Barkha: You have been a witness to Maoists violence first hand. Your husband was beheaded by the Maoists. If we were to ask you as to how this issue can be solved what would you say?

Sunita: Firstly, I'd like to say that for all those people who stay in villages and belong to the backward classes the government will have to take their plight into consideration and help them so that they don't get attracted to terrorism. These people are uneducated and deprived because of which terrorism seems more lucrative to them. It should be the government's responsibility to take all their needs and wants into consideration and bail them out of their misery. The benefits of the programs that the government starts hardly reaches these people or is usually a trickle of the funds that are allotted. They usually get expended.

Barkha: So you think that if these programs are executed well less number of people would take to arms?

Sunita: Yes. If everything that these people need is made available to them, things such as an education, then I am sure they could steer clear of taking to terrorism.

Barkha: You husband was killed by the Maoists but you are the only one who has the most balanced view here. I remember your younger son told us even after all this that he would want to become a cop. Will you be okay with that?

Sunita: Yes I will. I feel very happy to know that my son wants to become a police officer. I will be extremely proud to see him become a cop and ensure that his father's blood was well spent by making efforts to uproot terrorism.
