Financial situation difficult in Bengal: Pranab
Kolkata: To discuss the financial situation of West Bengal, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee met state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Finance Minister Amit Mitra in Kolkata today.

After the meeting, Mr Mukherjee told reporters, "The situation is difficult...both short term and long term measures are necessary. Measures will be worked out in Delhi between the officers of the state and central government".

Dr. Amit Mitra faces the tough task of presenting the new Trinamool government's first budget. West Bengal is in a financial mess with the debt burden of 2010-11 standing at Rs. 1.86 lakh crore.

"The treasury has been closed since last November. Situation is very serious. There were embargoes in many sectors as a result of which funds could not be provided. We are doing a special scrutiny to look into the problem", said Ms Banerjee.
