Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah -- after an assassination attempt on his father Farooq Abdullah this evening -- questioned how the attacker had got close to the former Chief Minister despite the high security. Abdullah, 88, is a "Z-Plus" security protectee - the highest level of protection given to civilians in the country - which allows him round-the-clock protection from National Security Guard commandos and the police.

"It was only the close protection team that deflected the shot & ensured that the assassination attempt failed. There are more questions than answers at the moment including but not limited to how someone was able to get this close to a Z+ NSG protected former CM," he added.

Abdullah Senior was attending a wedding in Jammu when the attack took place. Grainy CCTV footage from the spot showed the man following him closely and pulling out a gun and firing before being blocked by a commando.
The man, who was put under arrest immediately, has been identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, a 65-year-old, who lives in Jammu's Purani Mandi.
Sources said Jamwal has told the police that for the last 20 years, he was "waiting for this moment".
The police, after initial inquiries, said Jamwal had fired one round from his licensed weapon and his statement indicates that Abdullah was the target. The reason for the attack is not clear yet.
Farooq Abdullah has survived multiple terror attacks in the past.
