E Ahamed's Family Ill-Treated, Says Congress Notice For Discussion In Lok Sabha

Lok Sabha Mp E Ahamed died on Tuesday after cardiac arrest

New Delhi: Opposition protests over what it alleges was poor treatment of Lok Sabha lawmaker E Ahamed's family in the hospital where he died, led to the first disruption today in the budget session of parliament.. The Congress has put in notice for a discussion in the Lok Sabha.

Mr Ahamed, a former union minister, died of a cardiac arrest on Tuesday, hours after he collapsed in parliament during President Pranab Mukherjee's address at the start of the budget session.

The Congress alleges that his family was not allowed to meet him for hours at the government-run Ram Manohar Lohia hospital.

The party's lawmakers raised slogans as the day's proceedings began in the Lok Sabha.

On Tuesday night, there was a huge row in the hospital as top Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi showed up amid reports that family members were not allowed access to the parliamentarian.

Mr Ahamed family allegedly had an argument with the hospital authorities.

"I arrived three hours ago... They have no explanation as to why we cannot see him," Mr Ahamed's son was quoted as telling news agency ANI. "As a son I have the right to see him. We are shocked," he said.

Mr Ahamed was Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in the Manmohan Singh government.

After his death, opposition parties said the budget must be postponed by a day as a mark of respect. But the government proceeded with the budget announcement, saying it would be too difficult to put off the budget at the eleventh hour.
