Covid-19 Cases in India: The recovery rate was recorded at 97.57 per cent.
India reported 1,17,100 fresh COVID-19 cases on Friday, over 28 per cent higher than the previous day's cases. In order to deal with the surge, the government is speeding up vaccination drives across the country. Those in the age group 15-18 are now being inoculated.
The number of deaths climbed to 4,83,178 with 302 more fatalities, the data showed.
A total of 3,007 cases of Omicron variant of coronavirus have been detected across 23 states and Union Territories so far, out of which 1,199 have recovered or migrated, according to the Union health ministry's data updated on Wednesday.
Several states have announced restrictions like night curfew as Covid cases continue to rise.

352 Healthcare Workers At Chandigarh PGIMER Tested Positive Since Dec 20352 healthcare workers, including 157 doctors, of PGIMER in Chandigarh have tested positive for the novel coronavirus since during the past over a fortnight, the premier institute said in a statement on Friday.
"A total of 352 Healthcare Workers (HCWs) have tested positive since 20th December, 2021 in Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh. Of these, 157 are doctors - Junior Residents, Senior Residents & Faculty Members," the statement said.

West Bengal's Covid Cases Rise By 18,213 In Single DayWest Bengal reported 18,213 fresh Covid-19 cases on Friday, a four-fold rise since the beginning of the year and 2,792 more than the previous day, a bulletin released by the state health department said.
Kolkata accounted for the bulk of new infections reporting 7,484 fresh cases, some 14 per cent more than Thursday. The death count in the state mounted to 19,864 with 18 more fatalities, the heath department's bulletin said.

Calcutta High Court Allows Gangasagar Mela In BengalThe Calcutta High Court has given a go-ahead to Gangasagar Mela today with certain conditions after the Bengal government decided to go ahead with it after taking necessary measures to contain COVID-19, reported news agency PTI.
The court order stated that a three-member committee, comprising the Leader of Opposition in the state, Chairman of West Bengal Human Rights Commission, representative of the state, be constituted to ensure compliance to measures suggested by the state on January 6 to arrest the spread.
Goa records 1,432 COVID-19 cases; positivity rate touches 21.72%Goa on Friday reported 1,432 COVID-19 cases, with the positivity rate (cases per 100 tests) reaching 21.72%, up from 20.46% a day earlier, a health department official said.
The tally in the coastal state touched 1,86,198, while two deaths during the day took the death count to 3,530, he said.

Coronavirus Updates: 29 new cases take Arunachal's COVID-19 tally to 55,436
The number of active COVID-19 cases in Arunachal Pradesh rose to 103 after 29 more people, including five returnees from Goa, tested positive for the infection and only one patient recuperated from the disease in the last 24 hours, a health department official said on Friday.
The fresh infections raised the tally to 55,436, State Surveillance Officer Dr Lobsang Jampa said.
Seven Indo-Tibetan Border Police personnel are among the new patients, he said.
At least 55,051 people have recuperated from the disease so far.

Odisha on Friday registered its biggest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases in six months as 2,703 more people tested positive for the infection, a health bulletin said.
The daily test positivity rate jumped to 3.92 per cent from 2.62 on the previous day. As many as 409 children are among the new patients, it said.
The state's coronavirus death toll mounted to 8,468 as a 78-year-old woman succumbed to the disease in Khurda district, it added.

Actor Swara Bhasker tests positive for COVID-19
Actor Swara Bhasker on Thursday night confirmed that she has tested positive for COVID-19.
Taking to her Instagram handle, Swara informed everyone about her diagnosis. She also urged those who came in contact with her to get themselves tested just to be safe.
According to the statement shared by Swara, she and her family have been isolated since January 5.
"I have tested positive for Covid. I developed symptoms on 5th January 2022 and RT-PCR test results just confirmed the same. I and my family have been isolating since 5th Jan evening.. and I'm taking all the necessary precautions. I've informed everyone I met in the week prior about my having Covid; but if anyone else did come into contact with me, please get yourself tested. Double mask up and stay safe y'all," the statement read.
Coronavirus LIVE Updates: 24 new cases push COVID-19 tally of Andamans to 7,848
The COVID-19 tally of Andaman and Nicobar Islands rose to 7,848 on Friday as 24 more people tested positive for the infection, one less than the previous day, a health bulletin said.
Twelve new patients have travel history, while the remaining 12 infections were detected during contact tracing, it said.
The Union territory now has 105 active cases, while 7,614 people have recovered from the disease so far, including 10 in the last 24 hours. A total of 129 patients have succumbed to the infection to date.

Calling Omicron "Mild" A Mistake, Warns WHOThe Omicron variant of Covid-19 is killing people across the globe and should not be dismissed as mild, the World Health Organization insisted Thursday.
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the record numbers of people catching the new variant -- which is rapidly out-competing the previously-dominant Delta variant in many countries -- meant hospitals were being overwhelmed.
"While Omicron does appear to be less severe compared to Delta, especially in those vaccinated, it does not mean it should be categorised as mild," Tedros told a press conference.
Mumbai Daily Cases At 20,181, Chief Minister To Take Final Lockdown CallA decision on lockdown in Mumbai will be taken by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Maharashtra health minister Rajesh Tope said on Thursday as Mumbai crossed 20,000 fresh Covid cases - the threshold limit for more restrictions. The total number of fresh cases - 20,181 - is a 33 per cent spike over Wednesday's figures. Four related deaths were also recorded. The financial capital had reported 15,166 cases on Wednesday.
Of the fresh cases detected over the last 24 hours, 85 per cent show no symptoms. But 1,170 Covid patients have been hospitalised and 106 are on oxygen support.
Sources said the issue of lockdown was discussed at a meeting between Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar, the health minister, the health secretary and other officials on Thursday, but no call has been taken.
Asked whether the state government would impose a lockdown, Mr Tope said, "The government is studying the Mumbai numbers very carefully and a final decision will be taken by the Chief Minister".
