The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance is set to retain Assam, heading for a comfortable majority in the northeastern state. "It is a victory of development over appeasement," said Assam Health Minister and senior BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma over the party's performance in the northeastern state.Counting of votes for the assembly elections in the state is underway with strict adherence to health protocols as it is taking place amid a raging second wave of COVID-19. An average 82.04 per cent voter turnout was recorded in the elections to 126 assembly constituencies in Assam.

A three-tier security apparatus has also been arranged at the 331 counting halls across Assam that voted in three phases on March 27, April 1 and April 6, Election Commission officials said.

At least 15 rounds of sanitisation will be carried out at each polling centre, besides social distancing and other precautions, including a ban on gatherings, will be strictly followed, officials said.
