- Residents reported the baby slipped into the uncovered sump while playing outside the house
Tragedy struck Gandipet in Narsingi on Thursday when an eight-month-old baby died after accidentally falling into a water sump outside the family's house.
The child's parents had recently come to Hyderabad from Maharashtra in search of work and were living in a rented room in the area.
According to residents, the baby was playing in front of the house in the afternoon when the child suddenly moved towards an open water sump located beside the building. Before the family could notice, the infant slipped and fell into the sump.
Family members and residents immediately pulled the baby out and rushed the child to a nearby private hospital. However, doctors declared the infant dead on arrival.
The child's parents broke down in tears at the hospital even as relatives and neighbours tried to console them. The parents had come to Hyderabad only a few months ago, hoping to earn a better living.
Narsingi police reached the spot and inspected the sump. Police said the tank had been left open without a proper cover, leading to the accident.
Police have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating the circumstances. They are also investigating any negligence on the part of the building owner for leaving the sump uncovered.
Locals demanded that all open sumps and water tanks in residential colonies be covered immediately to prevent such incidents in the future. They said one small act of negligence had taken away an innocent life.
