Two elephants were today rescued by forest department personnel from a well at a village in Odisha's Sundargarh district, officials said.

The elephants, a female and a male calf had fallen in the more than 15 feet deep well by accident. The animals proceeded into nearby forest after being rescued from the big well at Bareiguda village in Nuagaon block under Kuanrmunda Forest Range, said DFO, Rourkela, Sanjeet Kumar.

The DFO said he despatched the rescue team soon after getting the news. The team reached the spot with earthmover machines and other tools and wooden logs.

Soon with the help of the machine a ramp was dug up so that the duo could walk out.

"With our previous experience we dug up the ramp for the rescue and also the villagers helped us a lot in the whole operation," said DFO Mr Kumar.
