- Anthropic issued 8,000 takedown requests after accidentally leaking Claude AI's full source code
- The leak exposed proprietary techniques, internal tools, and instructions for Claude's coding agents
- Leak stemmed from a packaging error, with no customer data or security breach reported by Anthropic
Anthropic has issued 8,000 copyright takedown requests following the accidental exposure of the complete source code for its AI model, Claude. This leak revealed commercially sensitive information, including proprietary techniques, internal tools, and the specific instructions used to transform its AI models into functional coding agents.
As of Wednesday (Apr 1) morning, Anthropic representatives had issued the requests to force the removal of the copies and adaptations of the raw Claude Code instructions that developers had shared on the programming platform GitHub, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.
The company said the leak was a result of human error, adding that customer information or data was not exposed. "This was a release packaging issue caused by human error, not a security breach. We're rolling out measures to prevent this from happening again," the spokesman said.
While Anthropic attempts to play down the blunder, the leak threatens to undo its advantage in the AI space. The company's competitors and other up-and-coming startups now have a detailed road map to clone Claude Code's features, sparing them the tedious process of 'reverse-engineering' the tool.
The leak is also seen as a blow to Anthropic's operational reputation, especially as it reportedly prepares for a $380 billion Initial Public Offering (IPO).
What Was Exposed?
The sensitive Claude Code information was exposed on Tuesday when Anthropic updated the AI tool. Security researcher Chaofan Shou discovered the leak when he found out that Claude Code had its entire source code compromised via a 60MB source-map file (cli.js.map) in its npm package.
This file allowed anyone to reconstruct the full TypeScript codebase, essentially exposing the underlying architecture of Claude Code. The exposed code includes the CLI implementation, agent architecture, unreleased features, and internal tooling - but not the model weights or user data.
Within hours of the leak, social media users were making multiple copies of the source code. Some programmers had already unveiled a few of Anthropic's tricks that made its Claude AI models tick better than competitors.

What Is Source Code?
A source code is the original, human-readable set of instructions that programmers write to build software. Think of source code as the original recipe for a dish: you may be able to taste the final product, but the recipe itself is supposed to remain private.
