New Delhi: Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui shared a picture of his two-year-old son Yaani dressed as Lord Krishna on Sunday, thanking his son's school for casting Yaani in the part. Nawazuddin's tweet arrives almost a year after he was barred from participating in Ram Leela celebrations in his hometown Budhana, Uttar Pradesh, citing his religion. The protest was led by alleged members of political party Shiv Sena. That was in October 2016, when Mr Siddiqui had promised to be part of this year's Ram Leela. Ahead of that, this is what the actor tweeted on Sunday: "I am glad to the school of my kid, who gave him an opportunity to play the character of 'natkhat nandlala'."

Last year, Nawazuddin Siddiqui was stopped from performing at Budhana's Ram Leela celebrations minutes before the show, which was later cancelled. Protestors reportedly stormed the green room where he was getting ready, following which the actor left for Mumbai without his scheduled stage appearance. On Twitter, he wrote: "My childhood dream could not come true, but will definitely be a part of Ram Leela next year. Check the rehearsals," along with a video.

Apart from advocating against religious intolerance, Nawazuddin also shared his experience of witnessing racism in Bollywood on Twitter. "Thank you for making me realise that I cannot be paired with the fair and handsome because I am dark and not good looking, but I never focus on that," read the 43-year-old actor's tweet posted last month, which appeared to be a possible response to his casting director Sanjay Chauhan. In an interview, Mr Chauhan told Deccan Chronicle that 'fair and handsome' actors can't be appropriately cast alongside the Gangs Of Wasseypur actor.

Earlier this year, Nawazuddin Siddiqui starred in a video, in which he highlighted the importance of religious tolerance. In the video, Nawazuddin holds up placards in the controversial fashion of Delhi student Gurmehar Kaur and describes himself as '16.66% Muslim,' '16.66% Hindu,' 16.66% Christian,' '16.66% Sikh,' '16.66% Buddhist' and '16.66% other religions' - which measure up to '100% artist.'
