New Delhi: US-based renewable energy major SunEdison today announced a long-term power agreement with Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (TPDDL) to supply 180 MW solar power for the New Delhi area.

"This is the largest agreement that SunEdison has signed under the open access solar framework, which allows renewable energy providers to sell energy directly through the national grid to end customers," a joint statement said.

The solar power plants for this project will be built in Madhya Pradesh and are expected to supply TPDDL electricity over the next 20 years, the statement said.

The plants are projected to generate 375,000 megawatt hours of electricity per year and eliminate the emission of around 300,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide at the same time, it added.

"Renewable energy is a big focus for Tata Power, and signing this power purchase agreement with SunEdison highlights our commitment, TPDDL chief executive Praveer Sinha said at an event in New Delhi to announce the deal.
