Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has been asked by a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) to pay over Rs 32 lakh to the parents of a 26-year-old woman who died in an accident caused by a rashly driven bus.
The tribunal directed United India Insurance Company Ltd, with which the DTC bus was insured, to pay Rs 32, 03,010 to the parents of Shreshtha, who was fatally injured after her scooter was hit by the bus.
"It was noted that there is nothing on record to show that the claimant had any enmity towards the driver of the offending vehicle so as to falsely implicate him in the case," MACT Presiding Officer Arun Bhardwaj said.
According to the victim's parents, the accident took place on the morning of February 12, 2011, when Shreshtha was headed to her office. At Kapashera, her scooty was hit by a rashly driven DTC bus. The impact of the accident threw her off her scooter and she died on the spot.
The victim had been working with Janalakshmi Financial Services Pvt Ltd and was earning Rs 4 lakh per annum.
The tribunal noted that before her last job, the victim had worked with two private banks and gathered rich experience of working with reputed employers.
While deciding on the compensation amount, MACT said the victim was a former student of Kirori Mal College who had also done her MBA and had good future prospects.
The bus driver had denied the allegation that the accident was caused by his vehicle.
