One injured in parcel bomb explosion in Delhi

New Delhi: A 45-year-old man was seriously injured on Monday after a parcel he received through a private courier company exploded when he opened it at his residence in south-east Delhi.

The incident took place in Shaheenbagh area of Jamia Nagar at around 4 pm and the victim has been identified as Mohammad Uzair, a senior police official said.

"The delivery boy of a courier company handed over the parcel to Uzair at his residence and left. As soon as Uzair opened the parcel, it exploded injuring him in the face and the hand. There was a mild explosion," the official said.

Uzair was rushed to AIIMS where he is undergoing treatment. His condition is stated to be serious.

Asked about the motive behind the incident, the official said they were investigating all angles including personal enmity.

"We are talking to his family and friends to know whether he has personal rivalry with anyone. We are not ruling out any possibility. Investigations are in the preliminary stage," the official said.

The official said police will talk to the courier company officials and the delivery boy. "We have to ascertain from where the parcel was booked," he said.

Forensic experts will examine the parcel to ascertain the intensity as well as which chemicals were used to make the parcel bomb, the official said.
