Officer probing Russian girl rape case seeks transfer
Panaji: A woman police officer heading investigations of the rape case of a Russian girl, involving a
local politician has requested her transfer from the Crime Branch, official sources said on Thursday.

Inspector Sunita Sawant, heading the investigating team of the sensational rape case, has written to superiors requesting her transfer to Goa Reserve Police (GRP), they said.

Sawant was handed over the case, in which John Fernandes, a local politician, is accused of raping the 25-year-old victim in his car, on December 1.

The accused is absconding after his anticipatory bail was canceled by the High Court.

The foreigner had alleged that 34-year-old John Fernandes, who unsuccessfully fought 2007 state Assembly election, raped her around midnight on December 1.

Sawant was apparently disturbed over the increasing instances of handing over of cases from local police stations to Crime Branch, sources said.

She is currently investigating 24 cases, including one involving Goa Tourism Minister Fransisco Pacheco, who had allegedly threatened a casino management.

The Crime Branch inspector is also investigating a sex scandal in which two local girls had allegedly committed suicide after being blackmailed with their lewd tapes.
