Mumbai suburbs get DJ academy

Mumbai: "Rocking the dance floor while you spin, cut and scratch," is what 26-year-old DJ Amul from Dombivli defines his mantra of disc jockeying. But this youngster does not believe in keeping his knowledge to himself.

So, after having played at several famous clubs such as Zenzi in Mumbai, Bluefrog, Aurus, Shalom & The Zoo in Delhi, Bacchus in Bangalore, Blend in Chennai, he has now started his DJ school 'Beat Station' in Dombivli.

"The school has been formed with an aim to provide effective training to those keen on pursuing DJing. There is no other DJ studio in the central suburbs with the latest equipment from the field," said DJ Amul. After opening schools in Nerul and Navi Mumbai, Amul now plans to branch out to Bandra by next year. At his school, the course has been divided into three parts -- CD mixing, turntable mixing and music management. "All courses will be certified DJ courses. Certificates will be given only after completion of the courses with regards to practical & theory exams," he explained.

Seeking inspiration from DJ Pravin Nair, Amul started DJing in 2003. After completing his graduation from SIES College of Commerce & Eco, he joined renowned DJ Jo Azaredo for training in turntables.

"The journey was not easy. When I got an offer from Zenzi, Bandra, I was working at Wipro in night shifts. So, I had no choice but to quit the job. Later, I joined an E-learning firm at Lower Parel. There I worked till 6pm and later played at Zenzi in the night. Mostly, I would miss my last train to Dombivli and had to spend nights at the station. This went on till December 2008. But, when Zenzi opened its branch at Lower Parel, things became smoother. Since then, there was no looking back," said Amul with a glint of pride.

Though successful in his own right, there are newer skies which Amul wants to win over.  He expressed, "I want make my own music piece and launch it on internet. Travel all across the length and breadth of the country for performances. I am also looking forward to playing at the European Music festival, the dream of every DJ."
