Man held for conning over 50 widows, devdasis

Mumbai: Malvani police station officials arrested a 22-year-old man on Monday for cheating over 50 widows and devdasis on false promises of getting them aid from the government.

According to the police, Ajay Sen, a resident of Patelwadi in Marve, Malad (West), forged the documents of a non-government organisation, Maharashtra Niradhar Mahila Sangathan in Ghatkopar, that helps widows and devdasis.

Assistant police inspector Sunil Nevse of the Malvani police station said, "The idea struck Sen when he came across a form being distributed by the NGO. He made 100 photocopies of it, and also made fake identity cards."

"Sen approached widows and devdasis in the Malwani, Malad and Kandivli areas and convinced them that the government has separate funds for them, and that they can get free food grains, along with monetary aid. He said that he is a member of an NGO which works for them. He issued them fake identity cards and made them fill the photocopied forms," said Nevse.

"Sen took Rs3,000 to Rs7,000 from each to get the work done. However, when they did not get any benefits even after two to three months, they contacted Sen, who assured them that he had submitted their forms and they will get benefits from the day their ID cards were issued," said the police officer.

"But when nothing happened for another month, the victims approached the organisation in Ghatkopar, and were shocked to learn that their documents were fake and that Sen was not their employee," said Nevse.

With the help of the NGO's members, around 20 victims approached the Malvani police station and filed a compliant against Sen. But Sen could not be arrested even though the police went to his residence numerous times. The victims were then told to keep an eye out for him.

"Last week, when Sen came to the area to approach another widow, they informed us and we reached the spot and arrested him on charges of cheating. He has been produced in the court and remanded in police custody," said Nevse.
